Es beinhaltet alle notwendigen Protokolle und Dienste, um u. a. Rechner, Drucker usw. miteinander zu verbinden, gemeinsam Modems zu benutzen und Rechner als Datei- oder Druck-Server zu verwenden. Es verfügt über eine dynamische Adressierung, so dass Rechner u. a. sehr einfach zu konfigurieren und in das Netzwerk zu integrieren sind.
Die Verkabelung kann über LocalTalk realisiert werden. Darüber hinaus besteht die Möglichkeit, Ethernet, Token Ring oder ARCnet zu benutzen. Auch andere Protokoll-Familien, wie TCP/IP oder NetBIOS, werden unterstützt.
